When Is It Time To Replace My Home’s Plumbing?

The plumbing system in the typical home is indeed a complex combination of pipes, joints and seals, and as it is responsible for the input – and output of water, it is critical it works as it should. As we all know, nothing lasts forever, and as your plumbing is working 24/7, there will be times when it malfunctions. For the vast majority of people, this is the time to call a plumber, yet a growing number of price conscious property owners are now tackling plumbing issues themselves, and saving lots of money in the process.

Time Takes its Toll

Like everything else, plumbing materials have a certain lifespan; and after 15-20 years, there could be serious issues underground with concrete drainage pipes eroding and PVC breaking down. It is recommended to have your plumbing inspected at least once a year, and if you know what to look for, there’s no need to bother the plumber, and with a range of plumbing supplies and services online, it is very easy to acquire the tools and materials you need.

Regular Visual Inspections

This will ensure that any defect is spotted, and with a rapid repair, there will be minimal damage. Plumbing components can easily be sourced from an online supplier, and as long as you have the right tools, why not carry out the work yourself? All you have to do is turn off the water supply at the mains, and then you can take your time with the work. There are step by step online tutorials for all plumbing tasks, and you can learn at your own pace.

Damp Patches

These are tell-tale signs of a leaking joint, and with the considerable pressure with mains water, it isn’t surprising that something has to give. Excessive wear will see the onset of corrosion, which is why you should always replace with quality components, which will ensure optimum value. Damp can be the onset of more serious issues, and unless the leak is fixed immediately, there will be a degree of damage. There are a few ways to protect your home against damp, which might help you to combat this serious threat.

Strange Noises

Many homeowners are totally baffled with the bumps, gurgles and banging they experience when the plumbing goes wrong. Remember that water under pressure can be very powerful, and with back pressure a real possibility, old pipes and boilers make noises, which is really a signal they need to be replaced. If you think you might have a ghost in the night time, it is more likely to be something amiss with the plumbing, yet our imagination can often play tricks on us. In the event you do hear noise, trace its origin and when the time is right, you can carry out further investigation.

  1. We just had an underground water leak at my house. The repairs were difficult and costly, but luckily covered by my insurance 🙂

  2. The struggles of being an adult! I mean its easier to just report issues to your parents as a kid but as you grow up you have to be keen and pay attention and take charge of such things… aargh!!!
    Great post xx

  3. My son and I have done several small repairs/upgrades, like replacing a kitchen faucet, but we’ve recently called in the professional to do some of the really hard stuff in our bathroom remodel.

  4. Most people in my area do their own plumbing. I have worked as a plumber’s assistant when I was younger. The training I got was..
Hot water is on the left,
Cold water goes on the right.
    Sewage doesn’t run uphill. Congratulations, you’re a plumber. 😀
In real life you can learn almost anything on YouTube.

  5. We repaired our shower last week, it was only 16 € material. A lot of things at our house are selve made, it saves money. And it was easy. There is a lot of information at internet how to do.

  6. Great post!

Nothing worse than plumbing problems!! If anyone ever has a clog in their mainline, don’t get ripped off by one of the many companies charging hundreds of dollars to clear it. You can do it yourself by renting a machine for about $75. Saved over $400 doing this myself. As suggested by llooydsphotography, you can learn a lot on youtube too!

  7. I am impressed that you two were able to DIY the plumbing system. I did replace the kitchen sink drainage, last Fall, with the landlord’s help. Washing machine faucet valves can do the most damage, as they can break when being shut off, thus flooding the drywall- a true nightmare.

  8. We recently bought a home in Guam and have been going through a lot of plumbing repairs and updates lately. We’ve discovered things that never should have been installed the way they were in the first place. Such a headache, but it’s a relief to know things are flowing right when it’s repaired.
