Why Isn’t My Diet Working? 3 New Answers To An Old Question

It happens to everyone. You start a new diet and then a week or a month later realize that you’re not seeing any effect at all. Your diet simply isn’t working. This can be frustrating, and it might even make you consider giving up altogether. But you have to remember that if you started a diet, you will have had a good reason. Perhaps you were trying to improve your health for your family. Or, maybe you were eager to regain your confidence from your youth? Whatever the reason you need to keep pushing forward. But first, you need to find out why your diet has failed.

How’s Your Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

Don’t let the weird name fool you. NEAT exercise is nowhere near as complicated as it sounds. Basically, there are always going to be times through the day when you are doing nothing physical. During this time, your body is actually working against your attempts to lose weight. Every hour you spend doing nothing is another ounce of effort that you’re going to need to put towards dropping those pounds. See the issue? Okay, but what if we told you that you can actually continue to burn those calories when you’re doing nothing? You can. For instance, while you’re sitting at your desk, try some butt clenches or just swing those arms around. Yes, you’ll look a tad weird, but you’ll be doing more to improve your health than the person in the cubicle next to you!

Are You Cheating?

Some people just can’t help but keep a few unhealthy treats in their diet. Alcohol is a popular one. You might diet and compensate by drinking a lot of alcohol. Unfortunately, while those shots may fill the hole, they are also high in calories. You’ll be shooting yourself in the foot here. Of course, this also presents the issue that unhealthy substances can be addictive, and that’s why a diet may also require rehabilitation. Particularly, if you love your glass of red wine with dinner a little too much. It’s not just alcohol though. Sugar can also be addictive as can chocolate.

Are You Sure Your Diet Is Healthy?

You might think that you’re eating healthy when really you’re not. An example of this would be diet ready meals. Diet ready meals seem like a great option for a few reasons. First, they are super easy. Bung them in the microwave, and you don’t even have to worry about getting out a cookbook. They are often boastful too, claiming that they contain zero fat which is too an extent, true. However, they might also have low levels of sugar and other additives to add some taste to an otherwise flavorless meal.

The advertised healthy option isn’t always the best. If you’re going to Mcdonalds and you order a salad, you’ll actually be eating more calories than if you chomped down on that devilish burger.

We hope these questions help you get the answers to why your diet hasn’t worked well for you.

  1. I have been away for a week and we ate two substantial and healthy meals a day and did lots of walking every day. And we are losing weight. There is no easy way, you have eat less and more healthy stuff, reduce fat and sugar, and do more exercise. It is easier in Summer because I fancy salads then. In winter I just want to eat stews and comfort food. Lots of sensible advice here, thanks 🙂

  2. Hi Ula, I have lost almost 8 kg now with eating less calories, around 1500 per day. I also do sport like running or cycling and walk min. 10,000 steps per day. Not always easy but I like the success. 😊 Yours Susi

  3. My dear this is so true…. Especially in regards to my tommy! Nothing seems to be working recently & I just feel like giving up, but I won’t… Cause flat tommy & healthy body is the goal.

    Thanks from sharing

  4. Good information! I am guilty of doing these and there are days when I put my discipline ahead but then… reading these has inspired me again to keep a check. Thanks

  5. ha..ha.. it is true:) I need to lose weight since I have put on 10kgs since I moved to Copenhagen Denmark, but it is soo hard to stay on diet since so many distractions such as good food and chocolate:) thanks for a lovely blog and reminder. I just need to stay focus on the diet. cheers and have a fantastic weekend ahead.

  6. Thank you for this. I am not fat, I think my weight is just perfect, my problem is, I lack a healthy lifestyle and eating habit and I really wanna change that.

      1. Maybe start doing it and trust me, beginning won’t be easy, but later on, you cannot wait to exercise again ☺🌺

  7. Great points. Mom was the great dieter and always carried around a lot of extra weight. I’m the non-dieter, but carry around no extra weight. But then again, I follow the concepts you’ve listed above. I also do exercise regularly which creates a fairly high daily metabolism.

Loved your thoughts on alcohol. It’s not called a beer belly for nothing. Alcohol can definitely help one put on and retain the weight. A natural diet, like the one I follow, without alcohol seems quite effective.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I think the post will benefit many. 😉

  8. This is interesting info, thanks for sharing this! I am currently struggling with my weight and have been for about 4 years now. I’m 44 and it’s so frustrating to see women older than me achieve their goals! I must of been doing something wrong. About a month ago, I started mini-meals along with walking several times a week. As of now, I lost 6 lbs. in a that month’s time. Problem is I have to keep doing this routine. Sometimes it’s hard! I want pizza and cheeseburgers!! I have an underactive thyroid, but it’s not that because I get checked and take meds daily. I think the mini-meals and more exercise is taking effect, I won’t give up I’ll keep trying!

    1. Just don’t give up and it’s going to be better and better and better! Stay strong, I belive in you! ☺🌸

  9. Great post! You’re spot on with the reasons that most people falter when they lose weight but I think that there’s another one and that’s the psychological aspect of being ‘on a diet’: there is a mental association with deprivation Rather than embracing and enjoying healthy eating and exercise as part of a healthy, happy lifestyle, people suffer being on a diet with a single goal – to lose weight and, once those pounds are shed, they go back to their habitual lifestyle and the whole cycle starts all over again. If we believe that we are making a positive ‘change’ rather than depriving ourselves of something we love, losing weight becomes a whole lot easier :O)

  10. I’ve read that your only suppose to lose about 2lps a week, so you lose the ‘right weight’ like fat. Working slow towards a goal is never fun, but it’s usually the best way lol

  11. Hi. Thanks. I needed to read this! I am two stones overweight at preseent! That is terrible! I am working on i – but have had a problem on the exercise front becasue of blisters!

  12. Instead of giving many reasons on why your diet isn’t working .. I’d like to know what are you eating throughout your day.. then i can tell what’s wrong..

  13. I was listening to a a Podcast recently all about diets: I think ‘dieting’ can be misunderstood. Really, to loose weight, all you need is the right balance of food and to excersise. Skipping meals is the worst thing you can do, as your body will hold onto the weight for much longer 😉
Great post ♥️ Have a wonderful day
