Even before I had a baby, I knew I want to breastfeed as long as possible. I also wrote a post about the benefits of breast milk for baby and mom some time ago on my blog. When the time has come and my baby was here, I had some different thoughts running through my head.
A Miracle
Let’s start with how incredible it was to see my fresh baby out of a womb start drooling on me once she was on my chest. V couldn’t believe that and said that it was a beautiful sight. After some time, I tried to nurse Lily and she knew right away what to do and how to get this “gold” out of me :). Something unbelievable. It was a true miracle for me. Well, the whole delivery/ experience was a miracle.
The first night that we spent at the hospital, Lily wanted lots of short feeds over a few hours, which is called cluster feeding. Because of that, my nipples were in so much pain. Luckily, I had an organic nipple balm with me so that helped a lot, but still not entirely. I was a little scared if that’s going to ever heal.
Breastfeeding Is Not As Easy As I Thought
Once we got home, over the first month, it got better. Though the often feeding during the day and night was pretty exhausting. I’m not going to lie. The first weeks postpartum, my hands and arms were very sore after labor. I was asking myself: “how am I gonna do this for at least 6 months?!”. I was hoping for way more than 6 months before, of course.
Sleep deprivation and pain (after the delivery and breastfeeding) was very disencouraging. I was asking myself: “should I continue this?”. At the same time, I wanted the best for Lily, no matter what. That being said, I kept on doing it, kept on pushing. Once we passed 2 months and I started to feel much better with the whole recovery, I said: “okay!”. I’ve realized that it’s not bad at all and it can be painless and even enjoyable. (Also, a breastfeeding pillow is a great help.)
Special Bond
So here we are now, I want to breastfeed Lily as long as possible. Until the last drop of milk. Nursing is a very sweet time. I also love how Lily puts her hands together while breastfeeding. What’s more, I love knowing that she’s getting what’s best for her. As a side note, I don’t know if you’ve heard about this: “Breast milk studied as potential coronavirus treatment“. It is certainly liquid gold :).
On a different note, I know that some women struggle with producing not enough milk (or cannot breastfeed at all). I was worried about it before. I’m so grateful that it’s not the case here. I’m very happy that I can pump extra milk (I’m using this pump) and freeze it so she can have it once we’re done with breastfeeding. I’m using this storage bags which are the best. I highly recommend to all the mamas out there to do this, (because the milk in the freezer is good for 6 months) :).
Another thing I would love to say to expecting mommies is that it might not be easy at the beginning, but worth it. Just be patient and strong and then one day, it will be a very sweet moment that only your baby and you can have! 🙂
