Having a baby completely changes your life. You find yourself completely in charge of the healthy, happiness and wellbeing of a small person who is entirely dependent on you. This is a lot and can be difficult to maneuver, especially if this is your first and you’re experiencing the big change between independent adult to adult with huge responsibilities. Of course, it’s easy to focus every ounce of effort onto your little one. But you need to be prepared to look after yourself throughout this time too. After all, if you don’t look after yourself, how are you going to look after your baby? Here are a few suggestions that you might want to take into account when it comes to maintaining your wellbeing as a new mother!
Keep Up With Checkups
Birth can be an extremely difficult experience and, chances are, you’re going to need some medical checkups following your birth. Whether you gave birth vaginally or through cesarean section, your doctor may need to remove stitches, check healing and ensure that everything is in order for a healthy recovery at checkpoints along the way. Sure, you may feel really busy now you’re looking after your little one, but you do need to make sure to keep up with these checkups to ensure that you are healing and receive any medical support you may need.
Being aware of your mental health is also important. Countless hormonal changes go on when you give birth, as well as changes in mentality and mindset that come hand in hand with your new responsibility. You need to make sure that you are feeling mentally well and – if you notice that you aren’t – you need to reach out for support during this trying time. A doctor will be able to discuss how you’re feeling and what you’re experiencing, providing you with a diagnosis for any mental health conditions you may be experiencing and being able to guide you in the right direction for ongoing support. This could be in the form of medication, therapy or even support groups and helplines.
Maintaining your fitness while maintaining a child can feel difficult. But you can manage this. Make sure that you’re getting your recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week by incorporating walks or strolls into your routine. You need to ensure you are surrounded by a good support network. This could be family and friends. It could be a new circle consisting of other new parents who you can discuss your experiences with. Having plenty of support on hand is good for your mental and emotional well being, giving you a means of venting and feeling loved.
