What Is Fair Trade? Why It’s Good To Support It

Have you heard that average person throws away 37 kilograms of textiles annually? North Americans send 9.5 million tones of clothing to the landfill every year.

We shouldn’t be filling out our landfills with clothes.

That being said, I’m very happy to introduce you to the company I’ve recently discovered: The Golden Rule Boutique. It is a boutique that is devoted to upholding the 10 principles of fair trade. I also love this sentence (which you can find on their website): “Life isn’t fair, this boutique is.”

What Is Fair Trade?

Fair trade is about supporting the development of thriving farmer and worker communities that have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. In other words, fair trade products vastly improve the working and living conditions of families in developing countries.

The Golden Rule Boutique works with companies that are members of Fair Trade USA or the World Fair Trade Organization. All these companies follow the 10 principles of fair trade:

  1. Creating opportunities for economically disadvantaged producers
  2. Transparency & Accountability
  3. Fair Trading Practices
  4. Payment of a Fair Price
  5. Ensuring No Child Labor & Forced Labor
  6. Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equality and Women’s Economic Empowerment, and Freedom of Association
  7. Ensuring Good Working Conditions
  8. Providing Capacity Building
  9. Promoting Fair Trade
  10. Respect for the Environment

My Tunic

The tunic I’m wearing in the picture and right now, as I’m writing this post, was made in Nepal. It is one of the least developed countries in the world, which ranks high for sex trafficking. It was designed with purpose to provide meaningful employment for women rescued from trafficking. This design creates a bright future for the overcomer who made it.

What’s more, it is a very great quality piece of clothing and so comfortable that I wear it almost every day. It is so soft and stretchy, which is a great athleisure style. I also really like the cold shoulders, because it is the accent that make this piece more unique. I’m sure that it’ll last me for a very long time. I love the pieces that are unique in their own way, but classic (not trendy). By adding some statement earrings to it and high heels, it’ll be a great top for some date night, as well.

Why Is It Worth To Support Fair Trade Companies?

As I’ve mentioned at the beginning of this post, there is a huge problem with our clothes ending on the landfills. They are the latest fashion victims. That’s why I am a person who prefers to pay more money in order to get a better quality of clothing. As a result, you not only have a top that will last for years, but you also help other people have a better life.

    Instead of filling the landfill with the old clothing, people could give it to the Red Cross … 😉
    … and your t-shirt is great … I love the colour as well.
