When your parents get to an age where retirement is looming and their lives are about to change, you might want to do everything you can to step up and help them out.
But seeing as they’re fully grown adults with a lot of financial independence on their side, your idea of help and their idea of help might not be the same thing!
That’s why it’s so important to listen to their plans, understand their needs, and be productive in the way you approach the retirement situation. And with that in mind, here are a few such ways to help your parents move into retirement as smoothly as possible.
Encourage Their Social Life
Retirement can be quite the sedentary period. What’s often thought of as being the end of working and the start of relaxation and leisure becomes this weird little transitory period where people struggle to adapt.
After all, work takes up at least 30 hours per week, with many people working closer to 50 in total. That’s quite a few hours lost to labor by the time you’re in your 60s!
So they might be in need of a little social encouragement right now. Let them know this is a good time for them to try out some new hobbies, attend some classes, go on a cruise, or focus on their local community.
Offer a bit of practical help with these things as well. Remember, the more they get out of the house, the healthier their retirement is going to be!

Life insurance can be a bit of a hard sell when you’re talking to your own parents, but it’s an essential thing to bring up at this stage.

And you’re not asking them to take out a policy here. It’s totally up to them whether they do or not.

The older we get, the more likely we are to be targeted by malicious parties after our money.
Scam prevention is a hot topic at the moment, and it’s senior age groups that tend to lose out to people like this more than anyone else.
Make sure your parents know the signs of a scam (urgency, won’t let you talk to anyone else, etc.), and remind them to never go against their gut instinct.
If they feel like a person is trying to take advantage, it’s OK to put down the phone or close the laptop, and get in touch with you.
