I’ve touched on before about my postpartum life in my 3 months later update. Nevertheless, there are still some things that I would like to write about. I know that it might look glamorous sometimes on Instagram and we all go through the same. I believe though that everyone’s journey is different and here is a little bit more about mine.

Expectations vs Reality
All new mamas are expected to be filled with happiness and forget about the pain they went through during labor. But do we only encounter pain at the hospital? No! That was my mistake to think that once labor is done and the baby is here, all the pain will be gone. As I’ve already mentioned before, I had a serious laceration. That being said, I was not able to normally sit without pain down there, I was not able to sleep without feeling the pain. It didn’t matter how many painkillers I took. I think that if I knew that it can be really bad after birth with recovery, I would be better mentally prepared.
That feeling of being helpless was making me so sad and was stopping me from fully enjoying my baby girl, Lily. Don’t get me wrong, I was overfilled with joy that I have this beautiful daughter. However, without my husband’s help, it would be so much harder. While he was taking care of her, I was taking advantage of it and trying to sleep (if the pain was not to hard to handle). When I had a little more energy after my sleep (or nap), I would spend some quality time with Lily. Of course, you always do the best you can, but I think that happy mama = happy baby and being in pain most of the first two months was very hard for me to make it happen.
Supporting New Mamas
I really like companies that come up with products to make this difficult time of postpartum recovery a little bit more pleasant. Hannahpad, that offers eco-friendly reusable cloth pads, came up with beautiful ilum Postpartum Gift Boxes that concentrate on us – women that went through unimaginable :). Each box comes with five wellness products of some great Canadian brands. As far as I am concerned, it would make a wonderful gift to your close mama-to-be or a gift for yourself to make things a little bit easier and more enjoyable!

Some of the things, you’ll find in the box are hannahPADs and lotion bar Lavender+Rosemary from Buck Naked Soap Company. HannahPADs are sustainable and healthy. They are free from unwanted toxic chemicals, because they are made from unbleached and non-dyed organic cotton. By using them, you decrease your environmental footprint, which we all need to do more of. On top of that, these pads last up to 4 years, so you end up saving thousands of dollars! Lotion, on the other hand, provides extreme moisturizing with rich shea butter and cocoa butter that soothe and nourish skin, while lavender and rosemary essential oils add an amazing scent. Other things are tea, illum bottle and witch hazel spray.
Patience Is The Best Remedy
Nothing happens overnight and as I said before, everyone’s length and pace of a journey is different. Some of us struggle with postpartum depression and feelings of isolation, others struggle with dropping the weight. Usually, there are both: the mental and physical ups and downs to navigate. It is important, in my opinion, be patient and stay sane to better meet the needs of our little ones. I challenge you to give yourself a few words of encouragement each and every day, no matter what stage of pregnancy or motherhood you are at. Always remember, you can do it! 🙂
