Your Bedroom Doesn’t Have To Be Fit For A Queen, Just A Sleep

There are guides to decorating your bedroom in just about any kind of style that catches your fancy. However, some think this is the wrong way to approach bedroom décor. It shouldn’t be entirely taste-focused but should be purpose-focused. More of us are suffering from poor sleeping habits and there’s some evidence the bedroom itself might be a culprit in that. So, how do you make sure the bedroom is actually doing its job?

Make Relaxation The Focus

Alertness is the enemy of sleep and too often we go to bed in a high state of alertness. Having a room that can you dial it back down and get into a more relaxed mood is going to do you a lot of good. For instance, think about using a calmer color scheme with light blues, or incorporating more temporary storage like these storage baskets from Timeyard so you have less clutter to distract you while you try to sleep. These ones are also the ones I really like: the large hamper or the smaller one.

(Don’t) Bring The Noise

Just as the bedroom can help you ease off the stress of the day and get into the perfect mood for sleep, certain mistakes we make with its design can get in the way of that, too. For one, having a TV in the bedroom is fast becoming a choice you’re recommended to avoid. It serves as a source of distraction and the light it gives off before you try to go to sleep has been proven to keep you alert for a lot longer. But this can go for any “multipurpose” elements of the room. Rather than keeping your computer in there, for instance, can you think of any other spaces better suited to serve as a home office?

The Bit That Matters The Most

At the end of the day, the bed is the most important piece of furniture when it comes to a good night’s sleep. Take your time finding not only the right size but the right type of bed. Some people prefer one with more give, while others prefer the support of a firmer mattress. Use furniture to help you accomplish that calmer aesthetic to the room, too. White bedroom furniture sets, for instance, create a feeling cleanliness that can be a big help. Having a bedroom that’s too dark can often make it feel a little dingy and even dirty. I really like this macrane curtain to hang on the wall that you can see above.

Hit All The Senses

The eyes aren’t the only thing that matters. Your other senses are just as important when it comes to getting in the right headspace for a night’s sleep. If noise is your trouble, then consider using things like draft excluders of acoustic tiles for the wall to help soundproof it. Aromatherapy is a proven relaxation tool, too, and keeping a fragrance diffuser in the room can help you maintain a subtle, but effective layer of lavender or jasmine throughout.

The bedroom isn’t the only contributing factor to poor sleep habits. Having a proper night-time routine, keeping yourself active and eating healthily all play a role. But the environment you actually want to sleep in can have a big impact, so it’s always worth checking there.

  1. As you mention, Ula, captivating all the senses is important to making any space…incredible. Nice décor thrills the eye and makes a room worthy, but engaging the other senses too, particularly touch and aroma, make it an experience. Indeed, some of the best stir memories that are with us for a lifetime,

    Thanks, Ula!
