Essential Oils 101

Essential oils have been around for a thousand of years. They’ve been used by Egyptians, in Chinese medicine, Ayurveda, Biblical times, by Greeks, Romans and so on. Yet I’ve met a lot of people that have no idea either how to use them or which one to use. I’ll do my best to create a blog post that will have it all in a short as possible form.

Attention, these highly concentrated plant derivatives are very powerful.

Where Can You Use Essential Oils

I make my own shampoo, conditioner, moisturizer (body lotion), face oil and soap with essential oils. I also diffuse them every day in my nebulizing diffuser. Whatever pain I or my husband are having, the first thing is to apply a couple of drops of the best essential oil that works for particular pain.

If you’re too worried about the strength of the essential oil, you can dilute it with one of the carrier oils such as jojoba, coconut oil, shea butter, or grapeseed oil.

Which Essential Oil For What

Lavender

This essential oil is my go-to whenever I feel a little bit stressed or overwhelmed with the things in my life. It improves mood and reduces stress very effectively and improves sleep. If I don’t diffuse it, I’ll apply a little bit under my nose in order to have a good night sleep. Also, it is an antioxidant protection, is used as a diabetes natural treatment, supports brain function, helps heal burns and cuts, promotes healthy skin and hair. I like adding lavender to my face oil. This essential oil is also great for relieving headaches and pains and is complementary therapy for cancer.

Ylang Ylang

I remember exactly when I first opened it, my husband and I couldn’t believe how incredibly nice it smells. I would say that that’s the reason why this essential oil lifts your mood, but of course, there’s a scientific proof for that. It’s just a “natural energizer”. That being said, it’s a great natural remedy for depression. It also heals cardiac problems, relieves inflammation, regulates heartbeat, fights parasites, promotes healthy intestinal function and increases blood flow. Girls, it is also a great PMS remedy (along with lavender oil).

Inhaling this essential oil is the best thing to do, in my opinion, because this way it can help you with your healthy digestion. I add it to my face oil, as well, which gives it a great, flowery smell along with its healing properties.

Frankincense

As far as I am concerned, this oil is a must. If I would have to buy only one essential oil, that would be my first choice. It is also one of the oils that was mentioned a couple of times in the Bible.

This oil helps boosts your immune system and function and prevents illness, helps reduce stress reactions and negative emotions (that being said, it helps you to fall asleep, as well). It can kill harmful germs and bacteria, (great for hand sanitizer). It also heals skin by reducing the appearance of scars and prevents signs of aging. Frankincense essential oil improves memory, eases digestion and helps decrease inflammation and pain. It may also help fight cancer, balance hormones and improve fertility.

Peppermint

Another essential oil my husband and I use very often, besides drinking peppermint tea :). Whenever either of us have stomach or muscles pain, peppermint is our go-to in this situation.

Peppermint essential oil is great for: relieving muscle and joint pain, sinus care and it has other respiratory benefits and is a great seasonal allergy relief. When I used to wake up very early, I used to put one drop of peppermint under my nose, because this oil increases your energy and improves exercise performance. It also alleviates headaches and improves IBS (irritable bowel movement) symptoms, promotes hair growth and reduces dandruff.

I’m sure you’ve noticed many peppermint toothpastes and it’s because it freshens breath and supports oral health. This oil relieves itchiness, repels bugs naturally, reduces nausea, improves skin health and provides sunburn protection and relief.

Rosemary

If your problem is your hair, I would suggest you rosemary essential oil. It discourages hair loss and boosts growth. This oil improves memory, as well, (it may help treat and prevent Alzheimer’s disease). It is also a great liver cleanser and booster, lowers cortisol and fights cancer.

Clary Sage

This oil is great for menstrual discomfort and it supports hormonal balance. That being said, it is great for women, but not only, because it also relieves insomnia, increases circulation and reduces cholesterol. It is also a great stress reliever, it fights leukemia, kills bacteria and infections, promotes skin health and aids digestion.

Tea Tree

Tea tree essential oil is great for dry scalp so if you’re struggling with dandruff, I’ll highly recommend it for you. This oil also fights acne and other skin conditions and soothes skin irritations. It fights bacterial, viral and fungal infections, helps prevent antibiotic resistance, relieves congestion and respiratory tract infections. It also improves bad breath and help treat head lice and scabies.

Eucalyptus

This essential oil is great for sore throats, cough, seasonal allergies and headaches. It improves respiratory conditions, fights infections, reduces pain and inflammation, aids wound care, boots mental clarity and improves earache. If you want to get rid of rats, you might need to try eucalyptus, because they don’t like it.

Sweet Orange

I really like the smell of sweet orange essential oil and I use it in my diffuser pretty often. It is anxiety calmer and mood booster so why not. It is also natural antibacterial, immunity enhancer, kitchen cleaner and ant repellant (I like adding a couple of drops of it to my cleaning products). Sweet orange essential oil lowers blood pressure, has anti-inflammatory properties, is a great pain reducer and is good for better sleep, as well.

Of course, we all know that vitamin C helps protect and heal skin (fighting signs of aging like wrinkles and dark spots) so sweet orange oil is great for using on skin (especially face). It is also a great acne and cancer fighter. If you’d like to protect your gums and teeth from infections, start using sweet orange essential oil.

Grapefruit

This oil is my number one whenever I want to conquer the cellulite. It helps fight acne and improve skin health so if you want to get rid of woman’s worst enemy, try it out.

Grapefruit also helps to boost weight loss, works as natural antibacterial agent, helps reduce stress and relieve hangover symptoms, reduces sugar cravings, boots circulation and reduces inflammation and aids digestion. It is a great natural energizer and mood booster (just like sweet orange), improves hair health and enhances flavor (I like adding a drop or two of it to my smoothies).

Bergamot

This essential oil helps to relieve depression, stress and anxiety. It also helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol, prevents and fights infections, alleviates pain, boosts skin health, aids digestion and boosts oral health.

Also, it is a great to use for natural deodorant and air freshener.

Geranium

I use geranium essential oil whenever I notice that my mood is not “normal”, because this oil balances hormones very well.

It is also a great muscle helper, wrinkle reducer, infection fighter, urination increaser, great for natural deodorant, skin enhancer and possible Alzheimer’s disease and dementia preventer. It can also kill your respiratory infection and is a great nerve painkiller.

Essential oils are something I cannot live without. I’ve mentioned above the ones I use the most in my every day life.

As far as I am concerned, it will make a perfect gift for someone who loves them already or don’t know anything about them. Also, this customized Organic Aromas nebulizing diffuser I got for my husband and I is a special piece that you can give to your loved ones this Christmas.

Diffuser Blends

Also, I would like to share with you guys my current favorite diffuser blends.

Since I was a little girl, we always had a real Christmas tree in my house. When I’ve moved out, I miss it every year, but no biggie, because I can blend only three essential oils and the smell and memories are coming back immediately.

Real Christmas Tree blend:

10 drops of cedarwood

5 drops of frankincese

20 drops of pine

My second blend is the one, which smells like peppermint candy cane. I’ll never forget when my (back then boyfriend, now) husband bought them for me when he had found out that I didn’t have them every Christmas :). So this smell reminds me of our first Christmas together :).

Peppermint Candy Cane blend:

10 drops of bergamot

10 drops of sweet orange

10 drops of peppermint

I like the strong smell so it can last longer, but you can always make half of the proportion and the smell will still be there :).

  1. I love using my EO’s, I use them everyday to help support both mine and my families health! I’m particularly loving all the “woodsy” oils at this time of year! Cedar wood, Balsam fir, Idaho BLue Spruce are my faves 🌲

  2. Thank you for this great post, Ula!
I am a fan as well and use it for aromatherapy (in water over a candle) and when I did massages, I used them a few drops in sweet almond oil. We used to take a heavy, a light and a flowery oil in combination, all after the client’s mental and physical condition.

  3. Mint is a gift from God! 🙂 Really though, all plants are. But I keep a vial of mint oil in every first-aid kit we have. Corn mint, not peppermint, because it has more menthol yet is slightly less expensive. It smells a bit more “sharp” though, but they’re fairly interchangeable.

Another great use for peppermint and corn mint: they help slow bleeding. Menthol is a vasoconstrictor, similar to ice, and you can almost watch small cuts pucker shut. Corn mint is definitely a stronger vasoconstrictor than peppermint.

I don’t use the dropper top that comes with the bottle, because “drops” are too inaccurate and inconsistent for my taste. I use a little glass eyedropper with standard international units instead. Especially in medical emergencies.

    1. The brand I talk in the post: Organic Aromas, because they have organic ones and not (you can compare). Also, you can purchase their sets, as well, which is great for beginners ☺🌼

    2. Mountain Rose Herbs is good too, at least from what I’ve purchased. Even Walmart occasionally has some gems too. You’ll learn to judge quality with experience. 🙂

    1. Yay! That’s wonderful! I’m very happy you like it and we’re both have the same smell going on 😊👍🌹

  4. I worked at an essential oil company for years, and most of the oils you listed were among the top sellers. It’s amazing how little known they are to the general public even though they’ve been utilized for thousands of years.

  5. Our family uses essential oils as well. They are our go-to for all first-line defenses. Frankincense is a must-have, I agree. I buy Elemi or Sacred Frankincense when money is tight and I need an alternative. Great post!!

  6. I’m not going to lie, I have to be careful with essential oils (certain ones triggers my asthma), however, I use Tea Tree oil like an addiction, something about it gives me a very chill feeling, and it has alot of benefits! Great post!

      1. If I had to choose from the 30 I regularly use I can only narrow it down to Lavender, Frankincense, Helichrysum, Peppermint & Rosemary.

      2. These are exactly I would choose, as well! I use helichrysum too, but not that often like others ☺🌺

    1. Wonderful and thank you so much! That’s very possible that I’ll be sharing more blends and more info about them ☺🌻

  7. I love essential oils. I have quite a few. I have one called Easy Air….this one helps me when my asthma is bad or when I feel that I might be coming down with a cold. I also have it as a roller….bliss…
